Rob believes this is the best way to learn. It begins to become an educational habit. Aside from the weekly interviews, Rob has the Monday Message. This began in June 2015 and continues today. Whether Rob is recalling a quote, suggesting a book, speaking about his own experiences, or just getting Photo World motivated to CRUSH their photography business; He delivers a unique perspective on a range of topics to keep us interested in all the aspects of photography and running a small business.

Hey PhotoWorld! - Take & Talk Pics

Pricing Your Photography

How do we begin with pricing our service as a photographer? Better yet how do we take it to the next level once we have started bringing in clientele?

Listen in to today’s Monday message where I share the financial story of my first wedding photography gig and why it was the right fit for me.

Remember to factor in:

What is the true value you bring to the table?

How much have you invested in your business (time, money, and education)?

What expectations do you want your clients to have?

What (if anything) sets you apart in these early stages of your photography?

I fully believe that perceived value is a big factor in this industry. However, that same idea is often abused. Being genuine has never hurt in the long run.

For those of you looking to grow take a listen to Episode 003 with Chis and Lauren Also listen between the lines of Episode 027 with Skip Cohen of Skip Cohen University. These two episodes talk business and more specifically they talk money. If you have been following the trends of the Message Monday Episodes you will find they all connect with the ideas that if you put in the time, really push the effort, get to work, and care about your business as if no one else does; you will have growth and success with your photography and your life.

A shout out to those who are pros and make their living with photography. Like me you are not starting and wondering how to price your fist job. However, do you feel your prices reflect what you are capable of in this medium?

I will bet that an overwhelming about of you are working 3X harder than you need too, getting paid 25% less than you should, and wonder why your business (while it is running steady) is not seeing much growth and just barley keeps in place.

Well just like our equipment prices go up and our taxes jump; we need to follow along to be on par. In golf par would be a great day for just about any of us but in life or business par feel stagnant.

I challenge you to take these 3 steps:

Are you ready Photo World?

  1. wake up 30-60 minutes earlier for the next 30 days
    1. This extra time gives you an opportunity most are unwilling to take. There for you have a dedicated time for concentration and high levels of productivity.
  2. Blog. Blog.
    1. Google doesn’t care about your site over someone else’s. It cares about content.
    2. Blogging is a difficult task to make habit but it can be the repetition of a blog that will replace your marketing completely.
    3. And it is cheap to do so.
  3. Do one thing that scares you 3 times a week.
    1. Make a system out of making a cold call you have been thinking about but feared the rejection from.
    2. Stop in to local business and introduce yourself.
    3. Call an old friend and just say hi.
    4. These simple connections can introduce you to new networks and therefore new possibilities.

Robs thoughts. -- I love the discussion on "the Walmart mentality" where Nick explains, in a unique but brilliant way, that your customers always get what they pay for. Not to be confused by the idea you can charge more to attract easier going clients, but honing in on your ability, seeing where your value stacks up, and working to niche down into the appropriate market.

Nick shared: Totally immerse yourself in your craft. -- What a perfect statement! So simple and easy to take with us #PhotoWorld.

Today's Monday Message is about working from home and the challenges we face. We need to make changes and avoid distractions. Change leads to growth and success.

Being your own boss may be a great feeling

If what you are doing isn’t working you need to take the steps to make it work!

You need to change – for the better.

A great quote by Chris Voss is “When you blame others you give up your power to change. Take responsibility for your future!”

The way I look at it is:

If you aren’t happy with where you are at… Change.

If your business is so much work the pleasure of being a photographer is slowly drifting away… Change.

If the list of things to do feels so overwhelming you’ll never catch up… Change.

There are ways around all of these feelings and misconceptions about our businesses and ourselves.

So many people I know or meet out there tell me they are unhappy these days. Forget photography for a second. I hear it from a ton of people from all walks of life. The same excuses:

“I don’t have enough money.”

“I don’t have enough time.”

“I don’t have the proper education.”

“No one will want me, so why even try.”

I have two ways of looking at change and if you understand the meaning behind what I’m about to tell you. Then you will have an easier time moving forward, not just in your business, but your life as well.

  1. For your personal life: “Change, when done properly, is based on looking back and the wanting to improve as you move forward.”
  2. For your business: “Small amounts of change will add up to dollars. The sooner you make change the sooner you make dollars. The more you make change the more you make dollars.”

How to keep going?

Well I find it is helpful and necessary to put many systems in place.

What do I mean by systems?

Well if you remember in episode 024 with Jim Harmer he suggested getting a 30 minute sand timer. So when you have a task you need to do; you start the timer allowing yourself only 30 minutes to complete as much of that task as possible. Once the time is up, you stop whatever task you were working on, flip over the timer and work hard for the next task. - I want to clear a couple things up though first. Just because you only schedule 30 minutes to get a task done doesn’t mean you do what you can and then it’s all over if you don’t make it. Nor does this method suggest rushing though a task in that block of time is a good idea… What this does is the creation of the light at the end of the tunnel for yourself and your work. An end game to help your mind wrap around the fact that in 30 minutes you are going to be done working on that particular task for today. If it’s a bigger project come back to it 2 or 3 times, but give yourself the breaks from one thing and move to the next.

A system I have in place is waking up early. Now, I am not a morning person… in fact it is the worst part of my day. However, when I get up at 5:30am, have my coffee, get ready for my day, and then get to work by 6am; that is the best feeling. It feels like I have a good 3 hours’ worth of dedicated “in the zone” work time. Before most others get to work and before my phone starts ringing.

You know… I have an email address for Rob Krueger Photography and I have one for Take&TalkPics.com and I have one for my teaching at The College of DuPage; with so many different kinds of email coming in I need to keep things organized for my own sake. So what I do is check on one set of emails just once during the day. I have specific times when I allow myself to take a look and get back to everyone I can.

The truth is if you don’t have strict policy in place then there is no reason to follow though. Holding ourselves accountable is the most difficult thing we must do as business owners. For anyone who has or has had a full time day job you can relate to this:

It always seems like your boss has nothing better to do than be checking up on you and seeing if you are keeping up with the unrealistic schedule, but that is the majority of their job. As small independent business owners we have no one to answer to; therefore, we only fear ourselves and the potential guilt we may have for not putting forth our best efforts some days.

I like to say this:

“If I can go to bed at night knowing I did the best I could with my time and my day, then I did okay; tomorrow will be a new test, a fresh start, and a new day to see how I feel before I go to bed that night.”

I’m going to leave you Photo World with a quote by Henry Ford: Whether you think you can, or you think you cannot – you are right.”

We have to change our lives or accept defeat by not trying. Even if we try and fail, we still learn and grow.

Episode 28 Breaking down the #1 easiest step to take for better success in your photography business.

I would like to break down 1 thing that has come up in several interviews so far and I imagine it will come up many more interviews to come. It is a simple quote I have on my wall in my office, it is the title of a book I often recommend, and it is the one thing that will make an enormous difference between those who are successful in their business and those who are struggling.

First off we should define success. Now my definition may be wildly different from yours when it comes to success, but the basis is similar for all of us. It usually lines up with financial stability, ability to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, health and happiness for your family, and satisfaction or happiness on a personal level. Again this is open ended and will change from person to person but whatever the ideal definition of success you have those common themes tend to overlap for most.

So what is this mystery topic? What is so secret that this build up is needed?

1
